A recruiter observes the applicant’s attitudinal traits, degree of flexibility, instances projecting his/her integrity, diligence and sincerity towards work

Impressing the recruiter is more than just a firm handshake or a decent sense of dressing. It has more to do with how you present your past experience, highlight your core competency and enthusiasm to work for that particular organisation. In short, if you are good at story-telling, then it is easier for you to excel during an interview, believe experts.

In a recent TimesJobs.com High Tea session, Shantanu Chatterjee, senior vice president – HR & Admin, Himadri Chemicals & Industries Ltd, shares some basic dos and don’ts:

• Have knowledge about the company


• Do not sport a queer dress or hair style


• Lend your ears for a clear understanding of all questions


• Do not speak much, remain confined to unambiguous answers

During an interview, the recruiter closely observes the applicant’s overall attitude, confidence level, general knowledge about the company and most importantly how eager he/she is to be a part of the organisation. But before all this, it is important that the recruiter makes the applicant comfortable. “Firstly, the recruiter should see and ensure that the interviewee is comfortable so that the right worth of the person can be perceived,” says Chatterjee.

The recruiter also observes the applicant’s attitude, degree of flexibility, instances projecting his/her integrity, diligence and sincerity towards work.

While the recruiter closely observes the candidate, the latter must not refrain from highlighting his/her weaknesses along with the strengths. The interviewer often asks the candidates to make a SWOT analysis – and in case the candidate fails to establish his negatives it brings out that he/she cannot do self assessment.

It is also important that the candidate avoids speaking negatively about his current organisation or manager – as that will not look good for him.

Too much talking during an interview is taken as a sign of a poor listener – the recruiter expects the candidate to only listen during the first half of the interview and ask questions in the latter half. However, at any given point if one is unsure of the questions being asked or have any query about the company, job location or anything related to the profile applied for – he/she should pose the question right away.

While the recruiters do not appreciate unnecessary questions, they do encourage applicants asking questions pertaining to the job.

RITES, Western Region, Quality Assurance Division with its Head Quarter’s at Mumbai intends to formulate a panel of lnspecting Engineers in M&C Discipline, who will be appointed in RITES on deputation basis. Accordingly applications are invited from willing individuals who are presently working Zonal Railways and Production Units in grade Rs. 9300- 34800 with a minimum grade pay of Rs. 42001-. The applicant should be either a Diploma holder in the relevant discipline with at least 10 years experience or a Degree holder with 05 years experience. (Applicants having passed Section ‘A’ & ‘B’ of the Institution of Engineers, India will be eligible to apply). Applicant should not be above 52 years of age as on the last day for submitting the application. i.e. 15/05/14

He should have adequate knowledge and operational experience in the discipline as indicated in the Annexure.

The candidates selected and placed on the panel shall. on appointment in RITES, be entitled to Deputation Pay (10% in case of the outstation candidates and 5% in case of local candidates) during their period of deputation.
