How Twitter can help you get a job

A new study has revealed that Twitter has emerged as an inherently ripe social network because of its huge professional audience and the unrestricted access it offers members to one another

The Society for Human Resource Management has found that 75 percent of companies use social networking sites to recruit job candidates and 66 percent of recruiters use Facebook for discovering talent, while 54 percent of recruiters turn to Twitter when vetting candidates, Mashable reported.

The new features in the micro-blogging site aim to make the network even more interactive, providing plenty of opportunities for job seekers to up their game. (ANI)

Infosys, TCS, Wipro increase focus on Cloud and Analytics

Despite plans of hiring a mammoth 170,000 in 2014, the IT sector is trying to brand itself as an industry that will need niche skill workers and not just mass-scale coders. “The sector needs to reposition itself and attract employees to work on social and digital platforms. Regular work will always be there but we also need coders who can take it to the next level and for that companies need to show them a strong growth path,” says Sangeeta Gupta, senior vice-president, Nasscom.

The industry has tie-ups with engineering institutes like IIITs to encourage more R&D work, added Gupta. Bangalore-based Wipro will launch a fellowship programme called Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff (DMTS) this year. A select lot from the technical front will have their career path chalked out in alignment with that of the CEO. “This is unique, an industry first, but will be for an elite group,” says Saurabh Govil, senior vice-president, human resources for Wipro.

On the non-technical front, 100 employees from global management schools will be recruited and posted across different geographies and exposed to a variety of business. “This will create long-term stickiness with the company and a pipeline of global leaders in the span of 8-10 years,” added Govil. TCS has spotted the shift in preferences, too, and is gearing up to become an employer of high-end skills.

“Unlike the ’80s, now students from IITs want to join core sector companies and will work with us for interesting profiles in R&D but not plain application-based projects,” says Ajoyendra Mukherjee executive vicepresident and head, global human resources for TCS. Mukherjee said students want to see a linkage between their R&D work and studies which many from IITs opt for. “We are facilitating those kinds of demands from students.

From an industry perspective we need people with PhD degrees because of work done in analytics and can’t rely on pure-play application work. Today, we offer students to pursue their masters and PhD programmes from Indian universities,” says the HR head. Three years ago, the Mumbai-based IT firm started supporting students who wanted to pursue their PhD programme. There are 130-140 students today and there is no compulsion that they have to join TCS. However, the R&D team of the IT firm is in touch with them to ensure the students are aware of the work done and will have a job with them if they want.

And the best engineering colleges are noticing the change, too. “Last December, TCS and Infosys came to us with research-based profiles that were interesting. But, they could not get the slots in the first two days but it shows that they wanted to hire the best and have new profiles to offer,” says the placement head of one of the IITs.

Training programmes scheduled from the first day will also ensure that candidates realise the company has their career chart in mind. Starting this year, Tech Mahindra will send their 318 management trainees through one month of ‘finishing school’ where they will have access to company leaders, go through psychometric tests for smoother transition into their roles.

Last year onwards the company shortlisted six young CEOs (under 35 years) who were given responsibility from new service offerings to launching a new engineering college. Around 5-10% of 87,000 employees of Tech Mahindra applied for it. Infosys, which faced its highest attrition at 18.7% in FY14, is in the midst of a career fast-tracking programme that would step up promotions for its executives. SD Shibulal, Infosys CEO, said during its annual results that the firm will also be ramping up its certification and training programme.

In a bid to do more upstream, consulting work, Infosys has gone on a drive to hire 200 students from Ivy League colleges, and some of the major international institutes this year. For Infosys, consulting is a core business focus for Infosys, as per its Infosys 3.0 strategy. And the need is high this year because client spends are expected to go up this year, say analysts.

“The IT industry has enough manpower to do work on skills at the lower-end. However, this year clients are expected to increase their spends on cloud, analytics, digital products and platforms for which they need highskilled employees,” says Ankita Somani, IT and telecom analyst for Angel Broking.

Says Sandeep Ladda, partner, technology industry leader, PwC India, “There is a big opportunity in emerging businesses, with the internet of things, and SMAC, and connected devices coming into play. There is significant market potential for Indian IT firms, in the two sectors of financial services and pharma.”
