10 Pointers Every Young Entrepreneur Needs to Know

A young entrepreneur might run across a lot of articles offering advice for the new business owner. But how many articles are actually geared toward the young entrepreneur?


As a former young entrepreneur myself (now I’m 30), I’ve decided to share my insights from my past experiences — all the types of things that I wish someone had passed on to me when I was first starting out.


Entrepreneurship-is


1. Do what you love.


When I graduated from college I worked at a job that I didn’t like because it paid me well. I hated to go into work each day. I admit that entrepreneurs typically make the worst employees because they want to be out there growing their own enterprise. Figure out what you love and then become the best that there is at it.


Your passion for your product or service will keep you motivated and get you through the tough times. Yes, there will be challenging moments. But when you work on something that you actually care about (as opposed to just trying to make a quick buck), you’ll probably be happy, have direction and fight as hard as you can to make this crazy idea of yours become a reality.


2. Stay focused.


It’s awfully tempting to jump from project to project, especially when it seems as if a million opportunities are flying by. But don’t become distracted from the big picture. Instead of working on multiple projects, stay on track and complete the task at hand. If you’re working on multiple projects, you can spread yourself too thin, which will have an effect on your performance, productivity and resources. Perfect that one thing instead of working on five so-so projects.


3. Exploit online resources.


The Internet is a gold mine of resources. For example, visit the site of the U.S. Small Business Administration for advice about writing business plans, legal considerations, loans and even local resources to help you get that startup off the ground. Other awesome online resources are the websites of SCORE, America’s Small Business Development CenterBplansVentureBeat and, of course, Entrepreneur.com.


4. Find a mentor.


Whether you turn to a local entrepreneur, a business leader or a weathered vet that you meet through LinkedIn, having a mentor is one of the best resources you can have. Not only might a mentor have experience (such as dealing with venture capitalists), he or she also could possess an extensive network and help you connect with the right people to make your startup a success.


Don’t be afraid to cold call or email a big name in the industry. Many of these big names like to help younger entrepreneurs as a way of giving back. I met my mentor when I was 12. He was the owner of a large carpet store. I was his paper boy. I delivered his paper in the perfect location every day for three months till one day I saw him. I asked him straight up, Will you be my mentor? He said yes. He’s still a mentor to me today along with many other people.


5. Take care of yourself. 


I was a young go-getter once. (At age 12 I started my first candy stand and had three at one point.) I know exactly how it is: You think that you’re invincible. Here’s the breaking news: You’re not.


As an entrepreneur, you might find it easy to push aside healthy lifestyle essentials, such as getting exercise, eating a balanced diet and securing enough sleep. But what good will you be if you’re tired or your immune system if weak? Plus, exercise is a great way to relieve some stress.


Don’t forget to make time for yourself. You need to take a break from work or you might burn yourself out. I personally love to listen to books and have since I was a kid. I’m not very good at reading as I have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder so I listen to books. Find what works for you!


6. Define your market.


Failing to define the market is a common mistake of a lot of young entrepreneurs. Always remember to consider if your business plan makes sense for your market. If you’re dreaming up a late-pizza delivery service, do you start it in a business district or a college town? There are a number of ways for you to try to define your market, such as by demographics or psychological factors.



I always hear people in the fashion industry tell me that their world is a $1.2 trillion market. Technically they may be correct. But if your product is hipster pants, the market isn’t $1.2 trillion. How many hipsters are there in the world? How many of them would purchase your product on a yearly basis?


7. Be able to explain your business at a whim.



You never know when you’ll have to explain your business. You could run into an investor in an elevator or end up making a sales pitch to a customer while out to eat. Always be ready to clearly and quickly state your mission, service and product or goals.


This is something I learned from Derek Anderson, the founder of Startup Grind, which hosts events for entrepreneurs. He took me to lunch about three years ago and asked me what I did and the business I was promoting. I really didn’t know how to answer. Since then I have refined my pitch so that when someone asks me what I do, I can tell them in five words or less. Practice your 5-second, 15-second and 1-minute pitch over and over. This will help you be able to explain your business to anyone out there in any situation.


8. Remember, you run a startup. 


Just because you secured some funding that doesn’t give you the right to act like you’re a rock star. A luxury home, an office with an actual shark tank or a really fast car are all just a big waste of money, especially in the beginning. Remember, you run a little-known startup (and you’re not Richard Branson overseeing a large successful company). Be careful about managing your cash flow and make sure that you keep track of expenses. That’s not being cheap. It’s being wise. You don’t want to burn through all your cash too early.


9. There are still rules.  


A major perk that comes with being an entrepreneur is that you’re the boss. You can make your own hours and develop your vision of a company. In short, you’re doing whatever you want. And it’s awesome. But there are some rules that all entrpereneurs have to follow like registering your business and paying taxes. These are just some of the not-so-much fun things you have to handle. If not, you’re going to be in just a little bit of trouble.


10. Know when to fold ‘em.


Sure, I’ve had success running and selling several different companies, but do you know how many I’ve started and stopped because they weren’t taking off?  Tons. Some say 9 out of every 10 business fail within the first couple years.


Don’t let your pride get in the way of closing your company. I learned this the hard way in college when I launched what became my first failure, Utefan. I knew that what I was doing wasn’t going to work or make money. I kept putting money into it and spending time on it. Eventually I had to give up my pride and stop. Know when to let go.


If you’re not familiar with the classic Kenny Rogers song “The Gambler,”then stop what you’re doing and check it out. It offers some of the best advice ever. Why? Just like any great gambler, you have to know when to fold ‘em. Instead of continuing to work on a fledgling business, it’s best to walk away and reflect on what went wrong. It’s not going to be easy. But it’s inevitable. And you’ll take that lesson with on your next venture.

Google to recruit through coding competitions

MUMBAI: Google India has changed the way it recruits from engineering colleges, trashing paperbased tests in favour of Google Jams or coding competitions. Candidates will now have to crack coding puzzles online to clear the first few rounds of the placement tests at the coveted firm.

Code jams are a popular method of hiring globally. Google too has conducted them in India, but only as part of its global recruitment process. “It has proved effective in candidate selection before the interview stage,” says a company official who does not wish to be named.

The online testing platform, he added, gives Google scope to evaluate a large number of students from select universities. Students are excited at the innovation. “My algorithms will do the talking,” says Pranav Ramarao (21), a computer science student at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad. He won a Google Code jam contest in Hyderabad last year and was taken to the company office for a day. “You can immediately assess how good your code is unlike a penand-paper test where you don’t know if the code is correct. They test your algorithms and data structure,” he explains.


At least 50 students will be attempting the code jam from the institute’s Hyderabad centre this month. Google India has given top engineering colleges (non-IITs) four placement slots. “We do not have to sit in an examination centre and take the test. We can be part of the Google jam even from our hostels,” says a student from NIT Warangal.


At least 90 out of 120 computer science students at the institute will take the Google code jam this year, says a placement team member. Google India refused to reveal its hiring target or the number recruited last year.


“Our students are placed globally so we do not recruit them keeping location in mind,” adds the official quoted earlier. Google India has been rated the best place to work for five consecutive years in ‘India’s Best Companies to Work For’ study conducted by The Economic Times and Great Place to Work Institute.

Big salaries make a comeback for engineering grads; Google, Microsoft offer crore-plus pay packets

MUMBAI: Google has set the placement season at top non-IIT engineering colleges off to a rocking start, offering $2,35,000 (Rs 1.44 crore) to BITS-Pilani students who make the cut for international vacancies, according to campus sources involved in the process. Microsoft is offering Rs 79.51 lakh for jobs at its Redmond headquarters.

Last year, Google and Microsoft had offered top salaries of Rs 68.34 lakh and Rs 60 lakh, respectively. Reflecting upbeat business sentiment, aggressive  recruiters including Amazon, eBay, Flipkart, Schlumberger and lesser-known startups such as CodeNation have hiked pay packets by up to 25 per cent compared with the previous year, mostly for domestic jobs.


They are also stepping up hiring in a big way. “There has been more than 40 per cent growth in the number of recruiters this year and the Goa campus has seen a 100 per cent increase,” said G Balasubramanian, chief placement officer at BITS-Pilani University.
The college has 4 campuses across Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai. “Salary packages have gone up by an average of 20 per cent at several companies,” said Samuel Rajkumar, deputy director (placements), VIT University.


Placements at the non-IIT campuses are a precursor to campus hiring at IITs, which kick off in December. Early indications at these institutes suggest that happy days are here again for the job market.
Epic Systems with a $1,08,300 (Rs 66.4 lakh) offer and Schlumberger with $1,05,000 (Rs 64.4 lakh) are the other top paymasters soon to arrive on campus during the placement season. According to campus sources, Goldman Sachs paid Rs 13 lakh this year for roles in the technological division compared with Rs 11 lakh last year.


For strategy roles, Goldman Sachs has paid up to Rs 35 lakh this year at certain campuses. Amazon has offered Rs 25 lakh to three students of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad, and NIT-Calicut.


At NIT-Warangal and NITK-Surathkal, the offers were for Rs 18 lakh. This is for domestic jobs. Rival Flipkart is offering Rs 15 lakh plus benefits across campuses and its subsidiary Myntra is picking up students for a similar amount but through a separate process .

AT NITK-Surathkal, Flipkart has been given the ‘dream company’ status along with LinkedIn, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. All students can sit for interviews at these firms even if they have other offers.

Even lesser-known startups are waging a fierce war for engineering talent. Code-Nation — which develops high-quality enterprise software — is offering Rs 24 lakh across campuses, substantially more than Flipkart. It has hired from NIT-Warangal, VIT-University and will visit NITK-Surathkal in the next few days. It is looking to hire 35-40 students overall, the company has said on its official website. As always, Esops are also in play.


LinkedIn is offering stock options worth $40,000 and a Rs 1.3 lakh bonus over and above a Rs 13 lakh salary. “Our placements started around 10 days ago. Around 50-60 offers have been made by 15-odd companies so far, not including PPOs,” Sumit Mishra, placement coordinator, MNNIT-Allahabad. The college has 800 students.  Placements will go on for a few more months.

What will I be doing?


As a Sales Manager, you will work with the Conference & Events (C & E) Sales Department to maximize revenue opportunities through the sale of conference facility space and Guest rooms. A Sales Manager will be directly responsible for performing the following task to the highest standards:


Maximize all Conference & Events revenue opportunities

Review sales and other revenue generating business plans, identify gaps, ensure proactive measures to fill hotel and conference space capacity, and meet set targets

Contribute to the selling strategy of the hotel and manage the departments so that Team Members adhere to the strategy

Understand the competitive marketplace and implement approaches to ensure the hotel stays competitive in the local market

Ensure the Sales Team is developed effectively and embraces a culture of high quality standards and proactive selling

Work effectively to build relationships with colleagues in the hotel

You can think of Udacity as attending college over the Web, just without the fancy diploma at the end.

Some courses are funded by corporate sponsors; Google has built the Android app development one, for example. As you would expect for $25 and above each month, the materials and content provided by Treehouse is consistently top notch.

This isn’t for beginners, though: you’re going to need some level of coding know-how to make sense of the material that Code School places in front of you. You could consider moving on to Code School after Udacity, Codecademy or even Treehouse, for example, though it depends on your existing level of knowledge and the type of code you’re working with.


There are four main paths to choose from—Ruby, HTML/CSS, iOS and JavaScript—but other courses outside of these main paths touch on Git, Objective-C, JQuery and other more detailed coding standards. Some of the material on the site is free, though there’s a flat monthly fee of $29 to get access to everything. Like Treehouse, there’s a mixture of screencasts, video tutorials and interactive challenges to help you get on top of your chosen topic as quickly as possible.


 


5. Dash

One of the spin-offs created by Dash lets you build your own custom Tumblr theme, which gives you some idea of where this resource is pitched.


You might not be able to launch a career as a freelance Web designer on the back of Dash alone, but it’s free to use and friendly for beginners, and by the time you come out the other end you’ll certainly have a solid foundation in browser coding skills. The step-by-step guidance and rigid structure of the course may feel a bit limiting at times, but if you want to be guided very carefully through the fundamentals of the Web then it’s perfect.


 


6. Code Avengers

Like Dash, the Code Avengers site focuses on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, though after a helpful introductory lesson you’ll need to pay to carry on with your coding education. Use the free lessons to gauge whether the level that Code Avengers is pitched at fits in with where you are and what you want to learn.


Code Avengers makes what can be a daunting and inaccessible topic very easy to get into. The way that repetition and reinforcement is used over each of the 12-hour courses means that you come away with some good programming habits as well as a good grounding in the ins and outs of Web development. The interface is clear and clean as well, and there’s a good mix of coding challenges, step-by-step instructions and practical projects to help you make progress with your Web development skills.

The Asset Analyst has responsibility for the day to day activities to ensure the accurate collection, storage, and maintenance of data on all in-scope devices in the asset repository. This team member is part of Asset Management Services and works at the direction of the Asset Management Lead. Responsibilities:


Building and sustaining effective communications with all stakeholders in the project towards the goal of maximizing Customer Experience

Timely and accurate reconciliation of lifecycle data relating to program assets and the asset tracking system

Reconciliation between various data repositories to ensure consistency of all data sources

Investigating and resolving discrepancies to maintain data integrity of the asset data

Managing preparation and distribution of pre-defined and ad-hoc reports related to asset management

Tracking hardware assets throughout their lifecycle, with special focus on missing and off network assets

Identify and report on potential problems with the asset tracking tool (system/performance issues, constraints, etc.)

Maintain related documentation

Develop and implement continuous process improvements and operational efficiencies


Qualifications


Hands on experience in project management, asset management and asset discovery – PMP and/or ITAM certification a plus

Experience with various database and spreadsheet tools – SQL, Access, etc. Strong Excel skills are required.

Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

Demonstrate attentiveness to quality, productivity, and the overall customer experience

Strong analytical and problem solving skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with emphasis on customer service, including experience handling challenging situations and conflict resolution
